The history of the Government College Women University Sialkot goes back to 1951 when it was established as Govt. College for Women to educate female students at the Intermediate level. The FSc classes were initiated in 1952, and BSc classes commenced in 1960. It was in 1960 that this institution was affiliated with the University of the Punjab for the undergraduate program. The College was upgraded to a Post Graduate College in 1989 when it started offering MA Classes in English, Urdu, and Islamiyat. A milestone development took place in the history of this institution on 5 th January 2013 when the Act to make it a public sector university was passed by the Punjab Assembly.
However, the College embarked on the journey of becoming a real University only after its first Acting Vice-Chancellor/ Founder, Prof. Dr. Nizamuddin, joined on 18 th March 2013.
Prof Dr. Farhat Saleemi was appointed as regular Vice-Chancellor of GCWUS on 12 th September 2014. In 2013, BS and MA/MSc were offered in only a few disciplines. However, after achieving university status, GCWUS, as an autonomous body, started offering degrees in various disciplines at the graduate and postgraduate levels. After successful completion of Prof Dr. Farhat Saleemi’s tenure, Prof Dr. Hafiz Kahlil Ahmad was nominated as Acting Vice-Chancellor, and his tenure lasted from 18 th October 2018 to 17 th April 2019.
The current regular Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr. Rukhsana Kausar, was appointed on 05 th July 2019. A new era has dawned ever since. Indeed, with a deep sense of mission and her far-sighted vision, this tenure will witness the fulfillment of high hopes, high expectations, lofty aims and objectives, and give great joys and a deep sense of achievement to all the stakeholders in the face of challenges. We are geared to take off to develop ourselves as Pakistan’s most prestigious women university.
