HISTORY & EXCELLENCE

The history of the Government College Women University Sialkot, goes back to 1951 when it was established as Govt. College for Women to educate female students at Intermediate level. The FSc classes were initiated in 1952 and BSc classes were commenced in 1960. In 1960 institution was affiliated with the University of the Punjab for undergraduate program.
The College was upgraded into a Post Graduate College in 1989 offering Master Classes in the subject of English, Urdu and Islamiyat.
A milestone development took place in the history of this institution on 5th January, 2013 when the Act to make it a public sector university was passed by the Punjab Assembly. However, the College had embarked on the journey of becoming a University only after joining of its first Acting Vice Chancellor/ Founder, Prof Dr Nizamuddin, on 18th March, 2013.
Prof Dr Farhat Saleemi, was appointed as regular Vice Chancellor of GCWUS on 12th September, 2014. In 2013, BS and MA/MSc were being offered in only few disciplines, however, after the establishment of the University status, GCWUS as an autonomous body is offering degrees at graduate, and postgraduate levels.
After successful completion of tenure of Prof Dr Farhat Saleemi, Prof Dr Hafiz Kahlil Ahmad, was nominated as Acting Vice Chancellor and his tenure lasted from 18th October, 2018 to 17th April 2019.
Prof Dr Rukhsana Kausar, has been appointed as regular Vice Chancellor w.e.f 05th July, 2019. Surely, this period of transition is going to be full of excitement, high expectations, joys and challenges for all stakeholders. We are geared to take off to develop ourselves as Pakistan’s most prestigious women university.
We strongly believe in academic excellence and do not compromise on teaching standards and discipline. The graduates of GCWUS take their place in moral, intellectual and professional leadership in all walks of national life.
Since the establishment of GCWUS as a university, the institution has striven for improvement in Higher Education. MOU with various Universities, national industries and linkages with Foreign Universities have been established in different fields.
The Government College Women University, Sialkot in terms of its ranking, securing the 5th place amongst the Women Universities of Pakistan and 29th position overall in Pakistan, as declared by the ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ 2021. This ranking was based on the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) i.e. Gender Equality (SDG5), Clean Drinking Water (SDG6), Climate Change (SDG13) and Quality Education (SDG4).
